Physician’s Pen: Why are relationships important?

I believe that we were created by God with an innate desire to connect to others. Research shows that people who have healthy relationships feel more satisfied with their lives and also live longer. Furthermore, having social support helps us to be more resilient in the face of adversity. Perhaps you can think of a time when you felt discouraged, frustrated or overwhelmed and someone that you know (a family member, friend, romantic partner or co-worker) said or did something to uplift you. Your connections with people can literally help you get through the hardest day of your life!

Conversely, you can probably also think of a time when a break-up or argument with a loved one negatively impacted your mood or the way that you feel about yourself. Just as there can be positive impacts from our connections, relationships can also negatively impact our mental health, physical health and overall contentment with life. This is why it is vital that we are cognizant of the signs of unhealthy or toxic relationships and know how to navigate these appropriately.

Since relationships are so valuable, it is wise to build healthy relationships by developing effective communication skills, learning proper conflict resolution and implementing appropriate boundaries. In sum, relationships significantly impact our mental health, physical health, and the way that we view ourselves. Let us focus on improving our relationships so that we can reap the many benefits (too numerous to list here) of having healthy relationships!
