DECEMBER INCLUSION IS WELLNESS

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities, observed annually on December 3, promotes awareness, inclusion and the rights and contributions of persons with disabilities.

How Can We Be More Inclusive?

  • Be respectful. Speak directly to a person with a disability rather than automatically directing conversation to a companion.
  • Ask before helping. Assistance should be offered respectfully rather than assumed.
  • Consider accessibility. Think about physical access, communication needs and other barriers.
  • Avoid assumptions. A disability does not define a person’s abilities, interests or goals.
  • Promote participation. Wellness activities, community events and recreational opportunities should be welcoming and accessible to everyone.
  • Listen and learn. People with disabilities are the best source of information about their individual needs and experiences.

This December, let’s create healthier communities where everyone has the opportunity to participate, thrive and feel included.

Inclusion Is Everyone’s Responsibility.
